Despite their best efforts, Union Berlin have hit a bit of a rut in the 230319 柏林聯 VS 法蘭克福 this season. 230319 柏林聯 VS 法蘭克福 have managed to win just four of their six league matches so far, and 230319 柏林聯 VS 法蘭克福 could potentially see themselves slip out of the top four if they can’t end that run against Eintracht 法蘭克福 this weekend. Come join 230319 柏林聯 VS 法蘭克福.
The game between these two sides is set to be a big one on Sunday afternoon. If Union can secure a win, they could be able to move into third place in the table and start building their first ever promotion campaign. Similarly, if the visitors can pick up a draw and keep their league position intact then they could have the potential to climb the table as well.
They have a strong connection to the city
While there may not be a direct link between the teams themselves, they do share the same history with the city of Berlin. They have spent the last 28 years in lower league football, and while it has not been easy, they are now enjoying their highest level of success to date.
They have made a name for themselves in the East German cup, and have won their biggest tournament yet: The FDBG Pokal of 1967/68, knocking out local rivals Zwickau and winning 2-1 against then East German champions Carl Zeiss Jena.
There have been a few high points during that time, including a surprise promotion push in the 2016-17 campaign which led to the popular chant “So ’ne Scheisse, wir steigen auf!” – meaning “Oh shit, we’re going up!” It was followed by another run of success in the Oberliga.
But the main highlight has been a long and difficult fight for promotion to the top flight. This culminated in a last-place Oberliga finish in 1988-89, which meant they started their life post-reunification in the third tier of German football.
It is this lower division struggle that has shaped the club’s identity as an underdog for decades. Their fans have become known for their raging hatred of their opponents, and even a few days ago they held a silent protest at the stadium against RB Leipzig, who they view as a team that goes against the values of German football.
Their fan culture is also a mix of old and new, with many newcomers identifying as part of the financial sector. This has helped to ease tensions with the hardcore support, who still have their own issues, but are now much closer than they used to be.
The team are very well supported at their home ground, Stadion an der Alten Forsterei, which is located in Kopenick in the south-east of Berlin. They have won 4 out of their last 6 home games, and will be looking to continue that good form against the team from Frankfurt on Sunday.
They have a lot of fans, and the numbers are growing all the time. The average age of the supporters is around 60, and some are even in their late 70s.
