He is a representative of the Hagi Raku ware school, which is a special branch of traditional Japanese ceramics. He has been regarded as an innovator and a master of this style since his early years, and has received countless accolades for his work.
As a young man, he worked in a tea house for a rich patron in Hagi. He later established his own shop where he made black Raku ware. He was a master at creating Kaname and Herame patterns, and was also well-known for making literary-styled tea sets.
His life was a difficult one, but his dedication to his craft was not weakened by his circumstances. He was able to keep his shop open despite the fact that he was married, and he was also able to make many tea sets and other pieces for his patrons.
During the Meiji era, the shogunate restored imperial rule and the traditional art of tea ceremony declined, buffeted by Europeanization policies. This led to the establishment of a tea room in his shop where he created tea cups and other pieces for wealthy patrons. He also made literary-styled chawans and other pieces for the Myoho Temple, where he became friends with prince Miyamasa Hitonori.
A very talented potter, he is the son of a prominent Japanese potter and was educated at the Kyoto Research Institute for Ceramics. He also studied under Hamada Shoji, Kawai Kanjiro and Yanagi Soetsu. He has been the subject of articles and book chapters, and he has won numerous awards.
In his early years, he had doubts about his own style, but after being introduced to Yanagi Soetsu, he became captivated by the art of pottery and began to develop unique molds. He went on to participate in the mingei (folk art) movement, alongside people like Hamada Shoji and Bernard Leach, and his work has been greatly influenced by both Eastern and Western cultures.
